Community Support
GEO’s contribution to the local community is not limited to employment opportunities, payments to contractors, taxes and the support provided by prisoner work crews.
Each GEO facility manages philanthropic activities through a community consultative committee. This committee develops relationships with local non-profit organisations, distributes grants and coordinates staff volunteer efforts and fundraising events.
The following is an example of the support for community organisations provided by GEO and the generous contributions of employees and inmates:
Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre
- donated a barbecue trailer purpose built by inmates and valued at $10,000 to the local Inala Community.
- annual support for the Canossa Nursing Home with its ‘Christmas in July’ lunch for residents and other support activities.
- educational support materials are manufactured by inmates and donated to the Goodna Special School.
- propagation of rare native plant seedlings to donate to Habitat Brisbane for distribution to 26 bushland care groups throughout Brisbane.
Fulham Correctional Centre
- provides annual financial support totalling $13,000 to local schools through the IGA Community Benefits Scheme.
- provided over $9,000 in sponsorship to the Sale junior football team.
- donated $3,500 to support local participants in the Victorian Country Disabled Basketball team.
- staff raised over $1,000 through breakfast barbecues to donate to the Sale Specialist School.
Junee Correctional Centre
- has introduced a Youth in Focus Scholarship program that provides up to four scholarships valued at up to $2500 each for academic excellence, sporting distinction, creative arts and youth in business.
- provides meals to the local ‘Wheels on Meals’ program that provides meals to elderly citizens who are unable to care for themselves.
- supports Assistance Dogs Australia by participating in the Pups in Prison Program – GEO provides training for the dogs to enable them to progress to advanced training and ultimately for the benefit of those with physical disabilities.
- manufactures bird breeding boxes for Riverina Land Care.
- inmates make timber toys for donation to the Salvation Army and St Vincents de Paul Society.
- inmates manufacture furniture for the local schools and various charities including Cancer Care and the Heart Research Foundation.
- completed a significant restoration project at a local cemetery winning praise from the community and the Wagga Wagga City Council.
- constructed a barbecue trailer for use by the local community.
- participated in the Cystic Fibrosis Great Escape Car Rally winning the award for the highest corporate fundraiser.
