Economic Development

A partnership with GEO provides an extensive array of economic opportunities in each of the communities in which we operate.

On average, GEO invests over $25 million annually in each centre’s local economy through wages, payments to local contractors, rates and charitable contributions.

The GEO Group Australia has a workforce of over 1000 company-wide. GEO recruits nearly every facility employee from the immediate local region. This extends to offering casual employment on a seasonal basis to meet particular community needs in regional areas.

As our facilities are managed on a contract, we can ensure employees a steady career. This creation of stable employment stimulates consumer spending, attracts new business enterprises and bolsters a community’s economic status.

In some instances a GEO facility is one of the largest businesses within a community and as such it can have a significant influence on its economic framework.

A GEO facility not only benefits the community with employment opportunities within its walls, but outside as well, through employment of local suppliers supplying various goods and services, payment of taxes and utility services and infrastructure enhancements.

GEO applies a ‘buy local’ policy to the majority of its supplier purchases. Through this policy a large number of local suppliers have been in partnership with GEO since the commencement of operation of our facility.

GEO has also developed strong partnerships with tertiary education institutions. Junee Correctional Centre has a $1.2 million contract with TAFE NSW Riverina Institute for the provision of training and education services. Fulham Correctional Centre has a similar partnership with the East Gippsland Institute of TAFE.

Another way that a GEO facility contributes to the local community is through partnerships with shire councils that lead to community improvement projects undertaken by prisoner work crews.

These work crews are involved in a wide range of activities including park beautification, maintenance of streetscapes and community facilities as well as disaster recovery. GEO provides over 45,000 hours of community work between the Junee and Fulham correctional centres each year.
