Located in Western Sydney, Parklea Correctional Centre was built as a maximum security institution for 220 inmates as a result of a recommendation of the Royal Commission into NSW Prisons (1976-8). It received its first inmates in November 1983.
The centre was reclassified from maximum to medium security in the early 1990s and was designated as a facility for young offenders in February 1992.
In 1993 Parklea changed to a remand and reception centre. In 1994, a minimum security Works Release Centre was opened external to the perimeter walls of the main centre for 88 inmates.
The Parklea Periodic Detention Centre was opened external to the main centre in 1996 for 80 weekend periodic detainees.
In 2001 the centre was reclassified to maximum security and in February 2003 Area 5 was opened to house an additional 222 inmates.
The Parklea Periodic Detention Centre was closed in 2005 and work release inmates were relocated into this area. The former works release area was re-furbished and became the Compulsory Drug Treatment Correctional Centre.
In September 2009 The GEO Group Australia was selected by the NSW Government as the preferred tenderer for the Parklea Correctional Centre and began managing the centre from the end of October.
Today the maximum security section of Parklea holds up to 743 inmates and the Work Release Centre holds 80 inmates.
